3 Accused in Murder of Sammy Gyamfi’s Father-in-Law Remanded at Tarkwa Prison – Police

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the three suspects standing trial for the murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwah, father-in-law of politician Sammy Gyamfi, are in custody at the Tarkwa Local Prison.

Police say Kojo Amponsah, Emmanuel Appiah, and Tanko Bashiru were remanded into prison custody after their arraignment and are due to reappear in court on May 7, 2026.

The clarification follows reports circulating online that the accused persons had escaped from custody.

In a statement, the Regional Police Command described the reports as “entirely false, misleading and should be disregarded by the general public.”

“A team from the Regional Command visited the accused persons at the Tarkwa Local Prison today, 27th April, 2026 and can confirm that they are all in custody,” the statement said.

The Command cautioned the public against fabricating and sharing false information that could cause fear or undermine public confidence.

It added that persons who do so may be liable for arrest and prosecution under Ghanaian law.

The three suspects, together with a fourth person now deceased, are alleged to have robbed and shot Mr. Amankwah at Owhim Tigo Junction in Kumasi.

They were arrested from various hideouts on February 22 and 26, 2026, through intelligence-led operations.

Police say further investigations have linked the suspects to other robbery incidents reported in Tarkwa.

The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2026.
