No Rift Between BoG And GoldBod – GoldBod Clarifies Governor’s Exit From Board

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has dismissed claims of a rift between the Board and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) after the central bank governor left its governing board.
In a statement issued by its Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, GoldBod described as false suggestions that the Governor’s decision to step down points to internal rot or a fight between the two institutions.
“A wrong impression is being created by some people that because the Governor of the Bank of Ghana stated at the last MPC meeting that he ‘resigned’ from the governing Board of the GoldBod five months ago, it means that there is a fight between the BoG and the GoldBod or that there is some rot at the GoldBod. That suggestion is completely false and reflects a lack of understanding of the GoldBod Act and the facts of the matter,” the statement said.
According to GoldBod, the Governor, Dr Johnson Asiamah, due to his busy schedule, simply nominated his Second Deputy, Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu, to represent him on the Board in accordance with Section 4(e) of the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140).
The Act provides that the governing body of the Gold Board includes “The Governor of the Bank of Ghana or a representative of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana not below the rank of a Director nominated by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.”
The statement explained that this practice is not new. Upon the establishment of GoldBod in 2025, the Minister of Finance from the outset opted to nominate his representative, Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, due to his busy schedule.
Similarly, the Minister responsible for Mines, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, who initially sat on the Board himself, in January 2026 nominated his representative, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Marcus Haligah.
“Likewise, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiamah, decided to sit on the Board of the GoldBod himself at the outset. However, due to his busy schedule, on May 11, 2026, the Governor wrote to the Board nominating the Second Deputy Governor to represent him,” it added.
GoldBod stressed that the Governor no longer sitting on the Board does not indicate any rot or conflict.
“The GoldBod is currently the main anchor of foreign exchange generation for Ghana; thus, it works very closely with the Bank of Ghana on a day-to-day basis. Ignore any suggestion to the contrary,” Mr Minkah said.
