We Back UN Resolution For Lasting Peace in Western Sahara Despite January 2025 Position – Ablakwa

Ghana says it has not reversed its January 6, 2025 decision on the Western Sahara issue, but backs a UN-led process for an amicable and lasting settlement.

The position was restated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, when he granted an audience to Mr Tayeb Al-Siddiq Al-Bashir, an envoy of Western Sahara.

In a statement after the meeting, the Foreign Ministry said Ghana desires to see an amicable resolution of the historical impasse and therefore welcomes the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.

Resolution 2797, he noted, expresses full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s Autonomy proposal, with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable resolution consistent with the UN Charter.

“While acknowledging that Ghana’s decision of January 6, 2025, has not been reversed, the Government of Ghana welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

He added that Ghana remains committed to continuing positive engagement with all parties and the international community in the pursuit of lasting peace and justice in the region.
