Kenya Ports Authority Understudies Ghana’s Port Operations Model

The Kenya Ports Authority has turned to Ghana for lessons in port efficiency, as it seeks to reform its stevedoring operations through private sector partnerships.

A delegation of senior management and technical officials from the Port of Mombasa arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, for a three-day study tour of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The team is specifically studying GPHA’s model of outsourcing stevedoring services – a move Kenya is considering to boost operational efficiency at the Port of Mombasa, East Africa’s largest port.

The delegation was received by GPHA’s General Manager of Administration, Dr Samuel Danaa, and the Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Delali Sewoekpor.

Dr Danaa said the visit underscores the growing need for African ports to collaborate and share homegrown solutions rather than looking outside the continent.

“Such exchanges provide valuable opportunities for institutions to learn from one another, adopt innovative practices, and collectively improve service delivery within the maritime industry,” he said.

The visit comes at a time when both Ghana and Kenya are positioning their ports as major transhipment hubs for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Over the next three days, the Kenyan team will hold technical sessions with GPHA officials and tour operational areas to gain first-hand knowledge of GPHA’s management systems and private sector partnership framework.
