Over 1,200 Imported Excavators Seized at Tema Port- Ofosu Kwakye

The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reported the seizure of 1,250 excavators at the Tema port in the last two weeks.

This, he said, is part of the government’s efforts to clamp down on illegal mining across the country.

“Fight against Galamsey gets more robust. In the last two weeks alone, the Ministers of Finance, Transport and Lands and Natural Resources, have caused 1,250 excavators imported into the country to be impounded at the Tema Port,” he wrote on Facebook.

The machines will remain in the custody of the government pending verifiable proof by importers of their use other than Galamsey, he said.

On Monday, President Mahama intimated that the number of excavators currently in Ghana was more than what was in the entire West African sub-region.

He announced that a permit would soon be required for the importation of excavators into the country.

“We will track excavators to know If they are being used for Illegal mining or not and we intend to change the permitting regime. You will not be allowed to import an excavator unless you get a permit to ship one.”
