BECE Candidates Miss Maths Exam After Headmaster Allegedly Locks Them Up

Two female students of Big Six International School at Meduma in the Kwabre East Municipality in the Asnati Region were unable to write their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Mathematics paper on Monday, June 16, 2025, after their headmaster allegedly locked them up for disciplinary reasons.
According to reports, one of the candidates was confined for owing school fees, while the other was confined for failing to participate in a pre-exam residential camping session organized by the school.
The situation has drawn public concern over how schools handle fee-related issues and discipline during crucial exams like the BECE.
Jacqueline Adoma Yeboah, one of the affected students, disclosed that she was prevented from writing the exam because she owed the school seven hundred Ghana Cedis (GH700) in unpaid fees.
The second student revealed that she was barred from taking the paper because she did not stay on campus with her peers over the weekend as required by the school.
The maths exam was held at Simms High School in Fawoade, one of the designated centres for candidates in the Kwabre East Municipality.
The situation drew the attention of the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East Constituency, Hon. Onyina Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi, who was on a tour of exam centres in the area. After arriving at the Simms centre, he was approached by the distraught students in tears.
“After visiting the centre, while leaving the school, the duo besieged before me with tears saying that their headmaster has denied them the access to write the BECE Maths paper because one person refused to stay at on campus and the other one is owing seven hundred Ghana Cedis school fees,” he said.
He described the headmaster’s conduct as unfortunate and called on the examination officer to report the matter to the police for investigation.
“I am going to explore the available means to seek justice for the candidates as far as their maths papers are concerned,” the MP assured.
