Why Asantehene Suspended Selection Process For Successor to Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

At the Asanteman Council meeting on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene directed the Asante Mampong Traditional Council to facilitate the enstoolment of the successor of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II within two weeks.

His Majesty said this was necessary for preparation for the planned Odwira Festival which commences in late October.

Otumfuo further outlined the traditionally accepted guidelines for the enstoolment.

At this point, the attention of the Council was drawn to two separate petitions submitted against the reigning Kontihene and Gyaasehene in Asante Mampong challenging their legitimacy to the positions.

The first petition by one Kofi Appiah was submitted before Daasebre passed away. The Council was told the late chief guaranteed the needed attention when he was made privy to it.

The same petition was resubmitted for the attention of the Asantehene after the demise of Daasebre.

A second against the Gyaasehene by one Akwasi Addai was also later submitted.

After hearing the issues raised in both petitions, Otumfuo held that the selection of a successor had to be delayed until the outstanding issues were resolved.

“I earlier said I wanted a successor within the shortest possible time but the outstanding issue must first be resolved.”

The Asantehene explained that the two kingmakers play crucial roles in the enstoolment process and thereby the need to deal with the cases.

Additionally, His Majesty said the resolution of the long-standing issue would go a long way to instil perpetual peace within the Traditional Council.

“There were some disagreements during the era of Amaniampong. I don’t want it to recur. We will delve into the matter immediately for the truth to prevail. When the probe reveals that the reigning leaders are legitimately occupying the positions, they will carry on their mandate but if the contrary is discovered, then they will have to step aside.”
