Pragya Ban is Still in Force – KMA

Mr. Kwaku Appiah, a transport convener at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso with Kofi Boakye on September 27, has reiterated that the ban on tricycles, commonly known as ‘pragya,’ is still in effect.

Despite some tricycle riders flouting the rules, the assembly is taking measures to enforce the ban.

To reinforce compliance, the assembly has begun installing specific signage at strategic locations to indicate designated routes for pragya use.

Mr. Appiah explained, “We have set up roadblocks with signs indicating whether pragya is allowed or not in certain areas. We began this initiative on Monday, and these are similar to signboards.”

The ban on tricycle operations within the central business district in Kumasi took effect on August 1.

Enforcement of the ban resulted in the impoundment of 46 tricycles for violating the restriction. This sparked strong opposition from riders who staged protests and converged at KMA demanding the release of the seized tricycles.

The Kumasi  Metropolitan Assembly believes that this restriction will help alleviate congestion caused by the riders and reduce accidents, some of which have resulted in fatalities.
