Govt Announces 120% Increment in NHIS Tariffs

The government, through the Ministry of Health, has announced a 120% increment in National Health Insurance tariffs to service providers.
This will affect claims issued effective January 2026, the sector Minister, Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced at a presser on December 1, 2025.
“Beginning next year, we are going to increase the tariffs in the NHIS to the health providers.”
He said it comes after the service providers complained about the existing “unrealistic” tariffs paid by the government.
“I believe this is going to be a game changer.”
He further reported that the NHIS covers around GHC 11 million of the total GHC 34 billion allocated to the health sector in the 2026 budget statement.
He touted the government’s decision to uncap the NHIS and its impact as he recalled how the capping resulted in delays in the payment of claims, unrealistic payment of tariffs, co-payment and other challenges.
He said this had increased public confidence in the scheme, further increasing coverage from around 18 million to around 20 million people in less than one year.
