We’ll Impound Your Cars and Prosecute You; KMA to Drivers Charging Unapproved Fares

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has warned that drivers who charge unapproved transport fares will have their vehicles impounded and face prosecution once caught.

It comes after the attention of Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi was drawn to the charging of new fares by some commercial drivers within the metropolis.

In a statement, he noted that the new fares are illegal as the Ministry of Transport, Transport Unions’ representative (GPRTU and GRTCC), and Regulatory and Consumer Advocates have not met to approve any new fares.

“It is therefore unlawful for any commercial driver to charge unapproved fares in the metropolis.”

He warned, “Commercial drivers who are found charging any unapproved fares in the metropolis are to note that their vehicles will not only be impounded but will also be prosecuted.”

He has since directed that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Metro Guards be deployed to major roads in the Metropolis to monitor and arrest drivers who disobey this directive.
