Suspension of 4 MPs Unconstitutional – NPP General Secretary

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has described the suspension of four Members of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin as unconstitutional.
He argues that the Speaker’s decision has no basis in the 1992 Constitution or the Standing Orders of Parliament.
According to Mr. Koduah, the Speaker does not have the authority to unilaterally impose suspensions.
He explained that the proper procedure would have been for the Speaker to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for investigation. If a case of contempt was established, it should then be presented to Parliament for determination.
Mr. Koduah cautioned that the Speaker’s action could set a ‘dangerous’ precedent and urged him to reconsider his decision.
He further disclosed that the NPP has directed the three suspended MPs from their side to report to work as usual. Should the Speaker prevent them from participating in parliamentary proceedings, Mr. Koduah stated that the party would take further action.
