Politicians Think of Party Interest Not Citizens – Analyst

Political analyst Yiadom Boakye has criticized political leaders for prioritizing the interests of their parties over the welfare of citizens. Mr Boakye argues that this self-serving approach has hindered national development efforts, preventing the implementation of crucial policies mandated by the constitution.

“The problem we have is the political leaders who only think of their political parties. They have tried to develop the country but they are the major problem because none is so patriotic to prioritize development,” he lamented during an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso with Kofi Boakye on February 26, 2024.

He highlighted the Directive Principles of State Policy outlined in the 1992 Constitution, which calls for the establishment of a National Development Planning Commission to formulate non-partisan national policy.

However, he observes that politicians often prioritize their party manifestos over these national objectives, leading to discontinuity in developmental projects between administrations.

“We have Directive Principles of State Policy in the constitution, it talks about National Development Planning Commission, that will come up with a national policy, that will plan for the country so that it will be non partisan but what happens is the politicans want to implement their manifestoes. So after 8 years, the next government fails to continue the old government’s policies.”

“The politicians won’t implement what is in the constitution because it won’t favour them.”

He asserts that politicians are reluctant to adhere to constitutional mandates if they conflict with their party’s agenda, resulting in a lack of accountability and progress.

Mr Boakye laments the influence of party allegiance over parliamentary decision-making, suggesting that citizens must advocate for their rights through demonstrations to address this systemic issue.
