National House of Chiefs Opens Nominations for President and Vice Positions
The National House of Chiefs, under the auspices of Sefwi Anhwiasomanhene, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi ll, has opened nominations for members who wish to contest in the upcoming President and Vice President elections of the House.
This was officially announced by the outgoing President of the House, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi ll, on Friday, November 1, 2024, during an emergency general meeting at their headquarters at Manhyia, Kumasi.
According to him, nominations are open from Friday, November 1 – November 15, 2024.
The Sefwi Anhwiasomanhene revealed that the elections are expected to take place on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi became the President of the National House of Chiefs on November 12, 2020, for a four-year mandate.
Delivering his end-of-tenure speech to the House, he expressed profound gratitude to the House for giving him and his Vice President, Nana Puowele Karbo III, the opportunity and associated work exposure to gain expertise in this sphere of national traditional leadership.
According to him, it has been a remarkable learning experience to be the President of the National House of Chiefs.
“It has been a remarkable learning experience and I am profusely thankful to all my colleague executive members, various committees of the House and all of you members of the House for cooperation and support,” he stated.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi ll indicated that the platform has given him the opportunity to learn how to accept criticism and compliment in a positive manner to embrace and value other people’s opinions, even opposing proposals, with an open mind, objectivity, and honesty.
He further indicated that he has gained a wealth of knowledge in chieftaincy, traditional governance, negotiations, and national politics as the President of the National House of Chiefs.
He emphasized that the National House of Chiefs is a national institution of national importance and a critical agent for development and promotion of peace.
The chief said that notwithstanding its national importance, the institution is plagued with disputes and litigations.
He indicated that his outfit has managed to resolve some long- standing disputes and litigations to reduce their numbers and negative impacts, unfortunately new ones have emerged.
President cited that they have eliminated the controversial questions 11 and 12 in thier Chieftaincy Declarations Forms which has made gazetting of newly enstooled Chiefs simpler and easier, thus reducing unnecessary litigations.
“We are not giving up but will continue to adopt the necessary measures and strategies, including augmenting institutional capacity to deal with disputes and litigations, nabbing potential litigations in the bud.”
According to him, it is not an exaggeration to say that the brand value of Chieftaincy in Ghana has improved and its public visibility continues to increase. However, there is a need to continue to work harder to maintain the image of the institution.
“We should do nothing to undermine this image.”
