Sam George Orders Suspension of Enforcement Action Against Courier Riders

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has issued an order for the suspension of the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission’s enforcement action.

The enforcement is being undertaken in conjunction with the Ghana Police Service.

The order comes after courier riders petitioned the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, over the mass arrests over their failure to license their operations as courier services with the regulatory body.

In a statement, the Minister acknowledged the necessity of the action for sanity and order; however, he indicated that it must be done with sensitivity.

According to him, stakeholder engagements and public sensitisation before the enforcement activities were a prerequisite.

“We must enforce the law with a humane face to it. I would, in the coming days, have meetings with the various stakeholders and fashion out an agreeable roadmap to implementation.”

In reaction, the YEA CEO expressed his gratitude to the Minister for his intervention.

“I’m grateful to the minister responsible for communication, Sam Dzata George, for immediately directing the halt of the arrest of courier and delivery riders around the country.”

“He has directed an engagement with the leadership of these riders and has proposed better reforms that will further guide their actions. Thanks a lot, bro. The over 5k courier riders unit says thank you.”
