Mahama Instructs Finance Minister to Make Additional GHC200 Million Available for Excess Maize Purchase

President John Dramani Mahama says he has instructed the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to make additional GHC200 million available to the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to purchase surplus maize on the market for storage.
It follows a similar instruction for the purchase of ¢100 million excess maize.
Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative on November 12, 2025, in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, he said the first instruction was given after his attention was drawn to some farmers’ lamentation about fears of post-harvest losses as a result of a lack of a ready market.
“I then told the Finance Minister to buy the excess. The ¢100 million was to acquire excess maize on the market for food security in the future.”
He said the lamentations persisted, forcing him to give a second instruction for the release of ¢200 million for purchase.
He said he had given a similar instruction for the Buffer Stock to buy surplus rice.
In the case of surplus eggs, he said, the School Feeding Secretariat had been directed to purchase them and add them to the meals of students.
“We also saw an abundance of eggs which cannot be stored, so I have told the school feeding to add eggs to the meals of students. They will buy the eggs for students’ meals to alleviate the burden of farmers.”
