LGBTQ+ BillBoard Down
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning Billboard along the Accra-Tema Motorway has been dismounted ahead of the 24-hour ultimatum issued by some members of Parliament.
On June 9, some sponsors and promoters of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill visited the site of the mounted LGBTQ+ billboard and instructed the Inspector-General of Police, George Akufo Dampare and the MCE of the area to take necessary steps to dismount the billboard.
The delegation indicated that the act is an affront to the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
The lead campaigner against LGBTQ+, Sam George said his group’s presence at the site was to “register in the strongest way, our displeasure, our discomfort and our abhorrence for this unholy, uncultural and untraditional advertisement that has been put on a very iconic road”.
In a video tweeted by the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram later, the billboard had been removed.
In a caption, he said “We can get results from the authorities (NDC or NPP) if we unite and collectively demand the changes we desire. True power belongs to the people. The billboard has fall ‘frat’. Power to our cultural sovereignty”.
But in an interview on TV3 News 360 monitored by opemsuo.com, Alex Kofi Donkor, founder and promoter of LGBTQ+ Ghana said his outfit went through the right processes and procedures in raising that billboard.
He added that “the billboard we erected was a message of love, tolerance and acceptance…No part of the message on the billboard was promoting homosexuality”.
Alex also disclosed plans to press charges.
