Kufuor Meets His Oxford Tutor At Portrait Unveiling
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor met his Philosophy tutor from Exeter College during his portrait unveiling event at the School last week.
Christopher Kirwan taught President Kufuor at Exeter College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England, in 1961.
He was present at the event by the University to honour the former President with a portrait in recognition of his “distinguished career” on 9 May.
The tutor and his student were captured in one picture with the portrait standing out on a board.
According to information from the College, Christopher Kirwan was a Tutor in Philosophy at Exeter College from 1961 to 2000 and held the position of Senior Tutor three times (1978–1980, 1986–1991, 1997–2000) before becoming an Emeritus Fellow in 2000.
He was a Visiting Fellow at Princeton from 1957 to 1958.
Kufuor graduated from the University in 1964 with a master’s degree in philosophy, politics, and economics.
According to the University’s rector, Rick Trainor, “President Kufuor’s importance as a democratically elected and high achieving President of Ghana, and in more recent years as an international statesman, more than justifies his portrait’s inclusion in Exeter’s historic Hall alongside other eminent people associated with the College since its foundation in 1314.”
Gracing the event were His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Asante Kingdom and his wife Lady Julia.
