Committee on Human Rights Hails Govt Over Prisoners’ Feeding Fee Raise

The Committee on Human Rights in Parliament has hailed the government after raising the daily feeding fee of prisoners for the first time in 15 years.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Committee, Ernest Yaw Anim, said it marks a step towards ensuring dignity for all persons.
“The Committee views this development as a great step forward towards ensuring dignity for all persons as stated in Article 15 of the 1992 Constitution, and various international treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as towards the attainment of Goals 1, 2, 3, and 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
He, on that note, urged the Ministry of Finance to ensure the speedy release of the GHS 10 million funds devoted to this purpose for the last quarter, as directed by HE the President.
The Kumawu MP further called attention to the ongoing construction of the remand block for the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons and health facility for the prisons service.
“The Committee appealed to the government to fast-track the completion of the remand block for the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons and hasten the construction of a dedicated hospital for the Ghana Prisons Service.”
The Committee affirmed its resolution on seeking and guaranteeing the advancement of a just, progressive, and inclusive society.
The government has approved an increase in the daily feeding fee for prisoners from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.
