GUTA Calls Off Protest

The Ghana Union Of Traders Association (GUTA) has called off its two days old protest.

The Association directed its members to close their shops to the general public in a protest against the hiking inflation rate and the steep depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

But in a press statement on Thursday, the leadership of the association directed its members to call off the strike which began on Wednesday.

The decision to call off the strike, the Association said, follows the intervention of the ruler of the Ga State and President Akufo-Addo.

“Following our strike on Wednesday, 19 October 2022, the King of the Ga State, Nii Tackie Tsuru II invited the leadership of our association to brief him about our concerns. After listening carefully to our concerns, he saw reason with us and promised to intervene and take matters to the appropriate authorities for an urgent solution.

“Immediately after the meeting with the king, the President of the Republic also invited us and listened to our grievances and the recommendations thereon”, a part of the press statement said.

It added that the President upon hearing them, called for the institution of a working committee to put adequate measures in place to tackle their grievances.

The President also promised to factor their recommendations into the government’s discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“We wish to appeal to our teaming members and the entire trading community who participated in the strike action to open their shops from tomorrow (21st October 2022) as we continue to pursue the process for an immediate solution.

On October 18, GUTA president Dr Joseph Obeng directed members in the Greater Accra Region to close their shops to the general public from Wednesday.

The protest was expected to end on Monday, October 24.

“It is obvious that we cannot contain these challenges any longer as it is becoming increasingly challenging. We want to send a hint to the government to recognise that there is a sense of urgency in this situation. On this note, by the power vested in me by the trading community, I declare that all shops in the Greater Accra Region be closed tomorrow till Monday”, he said after a meeting with the Council of State.
