Ghana’s Envoy to South Africa Engages Nationals in East London Amid Xenophobic Tensions

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quashie, has led a consular fact-finding mission to East London in response to recent xenophobic incidents in the province.

The visit, which took place on Monday, 28th April, 2026, formed part of efforts to assess the situation on the ground and engage directly with affected Ghanaians.

He was accompanied by two officials from the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.

During the mission, Mr Quashie first met with provincial authorities before holding discussions with members of the Ghanaian Association in the province.

The engagement was aimed at fostering dialogue and identifying the specific concerns and needs of the Ghanaian community.

Participants described the visit as timely and historic, noting that it was the first of its kind during such challenging circumstances.

Many said the High Commissioner’s presence served as a source of encouragement to the community.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Quashie urged Ghanaians in the province to remain law-abiding at all times, including in the aftermath of the recent attacks.

He further encouraged them to stay attentive to communications from the High Commission for timely guidance and advisories.

The High Commissioner also requested that community members share relevant updates on developments in their respective areas.

He said this would enable the Mission to formulate province-specific recommendations aimed at protecting and supporting their welfare.
