Germany, Ghana Strengthen Defence Ties as Sahel Security Threats Spread South

Germany and Ghana are deepening their long-standing defence and security partnership to counter growing security challenges in the Sahel that continue to affect the wider West African region.

The renewed commitment aims to support peace, stability, and resilience in Ghana and across the sub-region.

Key areas of cooperation include military training, capacity building, logistics support, and technical assistance through the German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group, GAFTAG.

GAFTAG has supported the Ghana Armed Forces for many years with specialised training and technical expertise.

During a courtesy call with the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, German Ambassador Frederik Landshöft highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing emerging regional security threats.

Ambassador Landshöft also shared insights from his recent visit to border communities in Ghana’s Northern Region.

He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s security institutions, particularly in areas vulnerable to spillover from Sahel-based insurgencies.

The discussions went beyond military cooperation as both sides explored opportunities to broaden the partnership beyond the defence sector, recognising that strong communities and human development are essential components of long-term security.

“Germany remains a reliable partner to Ghana in promoting regional peace, security, and sustainable development,” Ambassador Landshöft stated.
