Fire Guts 12 Bedroom House At Fante New Town
Fire has ravaged a 12-bedroom house at Fante New Town, a suburb in Kumasi near Roman Hill in the Ashanti Region.
The incident happened on Thursday, January 12, 2023.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Fire Service, DO3 Peter Addae the distress call was received at 4:55 pm and officers reported at the scene four minutes later.
No casualty was recorded, he confirmed.
In an interview with Opemsuo radio’s political show host, George Opoku Mensah, DO3 Addae said the fire officers managed to stop the fire from reaching four bedrooms and neighbouring houses.
He blamed the late report and the absence of gables for the massive destruction the fire caused.
“Accessibility wasn’t a problem. The call came in late. We received the call at 4: 55pm and we got there at 4: 59pm. From our investigations the fire started in one living room, took hold of the ceiling and spread across. The house has no gables and within a short time, it travelled to other rooms. The residents couldn’t detect the fire early and so they couldn’t call early.”
He said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined as the investigation is still ongoing.
He emphasised the need for attitudinal change to help reduce fire cases in the country.
“We need to change our attitude to fire safety. We are often worried about our security and not safety. Make sure you put off all electrical appliances when leaving your room. We must also practise good housekeeping.”
He also urged residents to get the contact number of the fire station near them.
Residents in the Ashanti region can contact 0505001415 or 0322022221 during fire emergencies.
