GJA Assures Support for Journalists Involved in Accident During EPA Activities Coverage

The Ashanti Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has affirmed its unwavering support for journalists involved in an accident in the line of duty following an attack by illegal miners.

Five journalists and three Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials narrowly escaped death after their vehicle was involved in the accident at Dadwene while returning from an anti-illegal mining (galamsey) operation in Obuasi.

It is reported that the vehicle took a dangerous turn when illegal miners attacked the joint team, leaving the occupants injured in the chaos.

Reacting to the news, the GJA expressed solidarity with the affected colleagues.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organisations. The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remain paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscores the inherent risks associated with the critical work our members undertake in pursuit of public interest, especially on issues related to galamsey.”

The leadership of the GJA in the Ashanti Region wishes to assure all affected journalists of its unwavering support. We are actively engaging relevant authorities and partners to ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and emotional support.
