Ejura Protest: Government Compensates Victims With GHC500, 000

The government has made good on its promise to compensate the families of two young people killed in a riot in the Ashanti Region town of Ejura last year.

On Saturday, February 5, the deputy minister of the interior, Naana Eyiah Quansah, presented each family with a cheque for GHC250,000, totaling GHC500,000.

The victims, Abdul Nasir Yussif and Mutala Suraj Mohammed, died from gunshot wounds sustained at a protest on June 29, 2021, in response to the murder of a social media activist, Ibrahim Mohammed nicknamed Kaaka.

In the alleged gunfire by soldiers during the protest, four people were injured to varying degrees.

A three-member committee formed to look into the incident suggested that the victims and their families be compensated.

A member of the delegation, Ben Abdallah Banda, spoke on the margins of a brief ceremony to hand the cheques to the families, saying that the presentation was done in fulfillment of a promise made by the government.

He also exhorted the town’s youth to direct their energies toward the town’s growth.

Families’ representatives expressed gratitude to the government for following through on its pledge.

They, on the other hand, urge the government to take steps to prevent such terrible violence in the area.
