Barekese Plant Shut Down for Critical Pipeline Repairs

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has shut down the Barekese Water Treatment Plant today, Tuesday, June 9, 2026, to undertake critical repair works on its transmission pipeline.

The shutdown, which began at 6:00 a.m., will last 48 hours and is expected to end at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

GWL says the works will affect customers in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area and adjoining communities that depend on the Barekese plant for supply.

Residents are likely to experience low pressure or a complete water outage during the period.

According to GWL Management, the repairs are critical to safeguard the integrity of the transmission pipeline and ensure continuous, reliable operation.

The utility stressed that the maintenance is necessary to prevent future breakdowns and improve service delivery.

“Management regrets any inconvenience that may result from this critical maintenance exercise,” the statement said.

GWL, in an earlier statement, urged all affected customers to store adequate water for domestic and commercial use during the 2-day shutdown.

It also appealed for patience and cooperation as engineers work to complete the repairs.

“Management appreciates the understanding of all customers as it undertakes these critical works to enhance the reliability and sustainability of water service delivery,” GWL added.

The company has assured residents that production and supply will be restored immediately after the repair works are completed.
