PNP Petitions Asantehene’s Office over Suspension of CJ

The Chairperson and Leader of People’s National Party (PNP), Hon. Janet Asana Nabla, has petitioned the office of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo.

She cited President John Dramani Mahama for injustice, abuse of power, and the erosion of constitutional democracy.

Nabla described the CJ as a woman of integrity with an exceptional judicial record, having dedicated over 35 years of her service to the country and rising through the ranks by merit.

“Today, that same woman is being humiliated, persecuted, and cast aside—not for any wrongdoing, but because of a dangerous political agenda led by the current President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama.”

According to her, the head of state is directly ‘assaulting’ the judiciary’s independence by targeting the CJ.

“Despite a lack of credible evidence or wrongdoing, President Mahama moved swiftly to suspend the Chief Justice. Shockingly, he appointed a known rival and critic of Justice Torkornoo—someone who has long eyed her position—to chair the very committee investigating her. This act alone undermines every principle of natural justice and fairness.”

Nabla also accused the government of subjecting the suspended CJ to human rights abuses.

She deems the “attack” on Justice Torkornoo as an attack on every Ghanaian woman and on the rule of law.

She therefore implored the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene.

“Your Majesty, as our revered traditional leaders, you have always been the moral compass of Ghana—long before we adopted democracy. Ghanaians look to you for justice, not just in the palace, but in the land… Protect a woman who has given her life to upholding the very constitution that the president now threatens to tear apart.”
