Hughton “Sorry” For Humiliating Defeat By US
The head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has taken responsibility for the poor performance put up by the Black Stars and issued an apology to Ghanaians.
The team conceded four first-half goals against the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) at Geodis Park, Nashville Tennessee.
It followed the team’s 2:0 loss to Mexico on Saturday.
At a post-match press conference, Hughton who has been in charge of the team since March 2023 acknowledged the “poor performance” and apologised.
“I’m very sorry, and I take responsibility for the poor performance against the USA,” Hughton said.
Dortmund winger Gio Reyna opened the score line 10 minutes into the game. Captain Christian Pulisic doubled it nine minutes later with a penalty and a 22nd-minute strike by Monaco’s Folarin Balogun extended the host’s lead while Reyna’s second goal for the day rounded up five minutes to recess.
The friendlies were meant to prepare the team for the Nations Cup in January but the two consecutive defeats have raised questions about the capacity of the coach at the crucial time.
Ghana is sitting in Group B along with record holders Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique in the AFCON.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars have two World Cup qualifiers in November. They will first host Madagascar, then an away match with Comoros- both from November 13 to November 21.
