Otumfuo, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands Deliberate on Ghanaians’ Financial Health

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, have initiated discussions on improving the financial health of Ghanaian families.
The deliberation was held at the Manhyia Palace on November 4, 2026, when the Queen paid a courtesy visit to the Asantehene as part of her five-day visit to Ghana in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health.
As the UNSGSA, Queen Máxima advocates for financial products and service that help people to manage their daily needs, protect them against financial setbacks, help to invest in their future and gain confidence in their financial future.
She unveiled her vision and objectives to the Asantehene as they discussed the financial architecture of the ordinary Ghanaian family.
They identified low rates of long-term savings, retirement concerns, vulnerability to scams, and poor financial management habits as major threats to household financial health.
The discussions then transitioned into practical measures to promote financial resilience, such as economic recovery initiatives, job creation, and expanded digital access.
Also featuring prominently in the meeting was Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The leaders agreed on the need for investment in modern farming technology and the availability of long-term loans from financial institutions to maximise the agricultural value chain.
Queen Máxima presented a decorative Delft Blue ceramic wall plate featuring an appliquéd design, alongside an autographed photograph of herself, as official gifts to the Monarch.
Her delegation included Jeroen Verheul, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ghana; Peter McConaghy, UNSGSA Senior Advisor; and Thys Hoekman, the Queen’s Private Secretary.
