KNUST Must Move Beyond Excellence To Global Eminence – Otumfuo

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has challenged the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to build on its achievements and pursue greater global recognition through research, innovation and stronger international partnerships.
He said the university must not become satisfied with its existing reputation but should continue to improve its academic standards, anticipate changes in technology and strengthen its contribution to national and global development.
Speaking at the 14th Global Biennial Congress and Alumni Homecoming in Kumasi on Friday, October 23, 2026, Otumfuo said the responsibility before the current generation was to leave behind a stronger institution for future generations.
“Excellence is what we have achieved, global eminence is what we must now deliberate to build,” he said.
The Asantehene noted that although KNUST had established a strong reputation in science, technology, healthcare, industry, education and national development, the changing global environment required universities to continually renew themselves to remain relevant.
He cited rapid advances in knowledge, technological transformation and artificial intelligence as developments that were increasing competition among universities for talent, funding and international recognition.
Otumfuo explained that global eminence should go beyond international rankings to include producing graduates whose competence and character earn respect, conducting research that solves societal problems and developing innovations that improve lives.
He further stressed the need for the university to strengthen its institutional structures and ensure that its strategic vision translated into practical results.
“The future of KNUST will not be determined by the quality of the speeches we deliver or the resolutions we pass at this congress. It will be determined by what we choose to do afterwards,” he said.
The Asantehene also called for effective governance, accountability and stronger collaboration between the university, industry and other partners to support its development.
He urged alumni to use their professional networks, expertise and resources to create opportunities for students, support research and innovation, and help the university establish meaningful international partnerships.
Otumfuo said achieving global eminence was a shared responsibility that required the collective commitment of the university community, alumni, corporate organisations and other stakeholders.
“We have inherited a great university, an institution whose history is great with achievement, whose graduates distinguish themselves with the rest of the world and whose contribution to Ghana and Africa continues to inspire pride,” he said.
The congress brought together alumni to reconnect with the university, strengthen professional networks and contribute to its advancement. Nine students also received full scholarships under the KNUST Alumni Scholarship Scheme.
