University of Ghana Celebrates Legacy of Dr Alexander Apau Dadey Snr

The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA), in partnership with the University of Ghana, officially commissioned the Alex A.Centre at the University of Ghana, Legon, on October 23, 2026, in honour of Dr. Alexander Apau Dadey Snr., an eminent Ghanaian scholar and educational administrator whose life was dedicated to education, public service, mentorship, and policy advocacy.
According to Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Dr. Alexander Apau Dadey Snr. was a former student of the University of Ghana and also served on the University Council from 1978 to 1985, cementing his legacy as one of the Council’s longest-serving members.
As a student of the University of Ghana, he benefited directly from the mentorship of the distinguished Professor Alexander Kwapong.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted some of his key contributions during his tenure as a member of the University Council from 1978 to 1985.
Dr. Dadey Snr. diligently served as National Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for five years and as President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) for six years.
He was also an accomplished educational administrator and leader, serving as Headmaster of Achimota Senior High School and Okuapeman Senior High School.
The commissioning of the Centre was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, alongside members of the University’s management, the leadership of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, son of Dr. Alexander Apau Dadey Snr., and other high-profile dignitaries from corporate Ghana and academia.
Paying tribute to his father’s legacy and influence, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, Founder and Executive Chairman of KGL Group of Companies, described his father, Dr. Alexander Apau Dadey Snr., as a man of extraordinary discipline, integrity, credibility, humility, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to public service in Ghana.
Dr. Dadey Snr. believed that education was not merely a pathway to personal success but also an instrument for transforming individuals, society, and national development in Ghana and across Africa.
Mr. Dadey Jnr. emphasised that, growing up under his father’s guidance and fatherhood, he learnt that the true measure of a person’s success lies not simply in the wealth accumulated but also in the lives positively changed and transformed, as well as in the institutions strengthened to benefit the country.
Dr. Dadey Snr. taught his children and mentees that a good name is worth more than material possessions and that the greatest legacy is what remains long after we have departed this world.
Touching on the Dadey family’s philosophy of wealth creation and distribution, the Founder and Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, stated: “As a family, we believe in a moral responsibility to give back to society and the institutions that nurtured us, shaped our character, and provided the foundations for our success.”
He explained that the establishment of the KGL Foundation was based on this conviction, as well as the principles and family tradition that began with his father. At the heart of this philosophy is a principle that, in their view, should increasingly define successful African entrepreneurs and business leaders: “Wealth creation and wealth distribution are two sides of the same coin.”
As far as the Dadey family is concerned, “we cannot celebrate the accumulation of private wealth without recognising the need to reinvest in the communities and institutions that make our success possible.”
The conviction inherited by the Dadey family from Dr. Alexander Apau Dadey Snr. is that “a truly successful business must create wealth for its shareholders, opportunities for its employees, and lasting prosperity for the communities in which it operates.”
