You’ll Be Arrested, Fined GH¢500 For Indiscriminate Dumping – Obuasi MCE Warns

The Municipal Chief Executive of Obuasi, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has announced a measure to arrest and fine anyone who dumps waste indiscriminately.

The warning comes as the Obuasi Municipal Assembly begins the installation of 150 new waste bins at strategic spots across the municipality to tackle littering.

“Anyone caught dumping waste indiscriminately will be arrested and fined not less than GH¢500,” she cautioned.

Mrs Appiah Kannin issued the warning in a Facebook post on Tuesday after joining the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmorteh, Presiding Member Hon. David Odoom, Assembly Members and heads of departments to kick off the installation exercise.

She said the Assembly’s bye-laws are active and will be enforced to ensure discipline, stressing that keeping the town clean requires both government effort and community cooperation.

The MCE clarified that the new bins are strictly for small, everyday public waste such as pure water sachets, snack wrappers and empty bottles, and are not meant for household garbage or bulk domestic waste.

She added that the bins have been secured with metal poles and padlocks to prevent theft and misuse, as highlighted by the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr Simon Agamgaba, and urged residents not to dump household waste in or around them.

Beyond the current intervention, Mrs Appiah Kannin revealed that the Assembly has begun plans to acquire and establish its own dedicated landfill site, noting that Obuasi currently shares the Ahansonyewodia disposal site with Obuasi East and Akrofuom.

She said she has tasked all Assembly Members to take ownership in their areas and work with local committees to ensure the bins are regularly emptied and well maintained.
