Obuasi Assembly Installs 150 New Waste Bins

The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has begun the installation of 150 new waste bins at strategic locations across the municipality as part of efforts to curb littering and improve sanitation.
Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, clarified that the bins are meant for small, everyday waste generated while in public, such as pure water sachets, snack wrappers and empty bottles, and not for household garbage or bulk domestic waste.
Citing the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr Simon Agamgaba, the MCE explained that the bins have been secured with metal poles and padlocks to keep them safe and prevent misuse, and appealed to residents not to dump household waste in or around them.
Mrs Appiah Kannin also disclosed future plans to improve waste management in the municipality.
She said currently, Obuasi shares the Ahansonyewodia disposal site with Obuasi East and Akrofuom, but the Assembly has officially begun plans to acquire and establish its own dedicated landfill site to give the municipality full control over its waste management.
She said she has charged all Assembly Members to take full ownership in their electoral areas and work with local committees to ensure the bins are regularly emptied and well maintained.
“Anyone caught dumping waste indiscriminately will be arrested and fined not less than GH¢500,” she cautioned.
