Gender Minister Holds Bilateral Talks With AU Commissioner On Gender Champion Workplan
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has held a bilateral meeting with the Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development of the African Union Commission, H.E. Amma Twum-Amoah.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of Ghana’s participation in the Africa Care Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Discussions focused on the finalisation of the work plan for the AU Champion on Gender and Development Issues.
The two sides explored ways to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the African Union Commission to support the effective implementation of the Champion’s mandate.
They also discussed critical issues relating to maternal health and cervical cancer, recognising the important role of the Ministry in complementing interventions within the health sector.
Emphasis was placed on strengthening social protection systems, advancing women’s empowerment, promoting community mobilisation, and addressing the social and economic vulnerabilities that continue to affect women and girls.
The meeting underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation between Ghana and the African Union in advancing gender equality, protecting the rights and well-being of women and girls, and strengthening coordinated responses to challenges affecting vulnerable populations across the continent.
Dr Lartey was accompanied by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Deputy Ambassador, and the Director of the Department of Gender of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, among others.
