Police Arrest Six Suspects Over Violent Attack At New Winneba

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with violent rioting and attacks at New Winneba that left three persons dead and about 15 others injured, including a police officer.

The suspects have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52 years, Arko Thomas, 19 years, Samuel Tulasi, 19 years, Samuel Gyasi, 22 years, Emmanuel Okyere, 22 years and Seth Osei, 22 years.

According to a press release dated 2nd September, 2026, and signed by Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit, Central Region, Cape Coast, the incident occurred on September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 am when about 300 irate youth wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township.

The mob reportedly attacked natives, stormed stores and residences and caused damage to properties.

In the course of the attack, about 15 injured victims, including one Police officer, were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital – Winneba for treatment. Three persons were later confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.

Police also retrieved one locally made single-barrel gun and one AAA empty cartridge from the crime scene.

Following the incident, Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division, Mankessim Division, including the IGP’s special team, as reinforcement with two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, were deployed to beef up security in the area.

The Police said six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area, day and night patrols have been intensified to avert further escalation, while PID and CID personnel have also been deployed to monitor the situation. The Command added that the area remains calm and the situation is currently under control.

All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations.
