Ghana Needs Fair, Efficient Tax System to Drive Development — Vice President

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says Ghana needs a tax system that raises the revenue required for development while remaining fair, efficient and supportive of businesses and individuals.
She made the remarks at the 14th Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana, held under the theme “Tax Reforms in Practice: Implications for Businesses and Tax Administration.”
The event brought together tax professionals, policymakers, business leaders and international participants.
In a Facebook post after the event, the Vice President said the government has already taken important steps to ease the tax burden and simplify the system, but noted that changing tax laws is only part of the work.
“We must also make compliance easier through stronger administration, better use of technology and data, simpler processes and improved taxpayer education,” she stated.
She stressed that trust is equally important, saying people are more likely to meet their obligations when they understand the system, believe it is fair and can engage with tax authorities without unnecessary difficulty.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the role of tax professionals in building that trust, noting that they help businesses and individuals understand their obligations, support compliance, and contribute valuable professional experience to tax policy development.
She added that as the nature of business and international taxation continues to evolve, Ghana must remain technically prepared and work with other African countries to ensure its interests are effectively represented in global tax discussions.
