Peace Council Urges Restraint Over Viral Videos Linked to Religious Commentary and Arrest

The National Peace Council has called on Ghanaians to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory commentary following the circulation of videos on social and traditional media relating to alleged inciteful religious remarks and a separate incident involving a person in state custody.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the Council said it had taken note of two distinct matters trending online: alleged inciteful religious commentary that has led to arrests, and separate footage suggesting a person restrained in handcuffs in the presence of persons associated with law enforcement.

The NPC urged the public to treat each matter on its own facts rather than conflate them.

Addressing the religious dimension, the Council described the issues as “extremely sensitive” and appealed to religious leaders, political actors, civil society organizations, and media practitioners to avoid drawing premature conclusions and to refrain from commentary that could incite religious or communal tensions.

“Accountability, fairness, and respect for human dignity are essential to maintaining public confidence in our institutions and preserving Ghana’s tradition of peaceful coexistence,” the statement noted.

The NPC said it is in direct contact with the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Christian Council of Ghana, and other religious and traditional authorities, and will continue to monitor developments closely.

It urged all stakeholders to act responsibly with emotional maturity in public commentary to prevent the matter from escalating into religious tension or confrontation.

The Council added that promoting respectful and measured discourse is key to collectively preserving and strengthening the peace, unity, and social cohesion that Ghana continues to enjoy.
