Police Engage Religious Leaders Over Rising Tensions After Prophet Mohammed Remarks

The Ghana Police Service is holding an emergency engagement with religious leaders at the Emergency Command Centre as part of efforts to calm tensions and promote peaceful coexistence.

The meeting, held on August 14, 2026, comes in the wake of derogatory remarks made by a pastor against Prophet Mohammed.

The comments triggered outrage, with some Muslims calling for the killing of anyone who speaks against the Prophet.

According to the Police, the engagement was aimed at urging faith leaders to help de-escalate tensions, discourage incitement, and promote messages of tolerance and mutual respect among their congregations.

The Police Service emphasised the need for religious leaders to work with security agencies to prevent the situation from escalating into violence or unrest, and to ensure that Ghana’s tradition of religious harmony is preserved.

The Ghana Police Service has in recent days intensified public appeals for calm, warning that any person or group found to be making inflammatory statements or threatening violence will face the full rigours of the law.
