Deputy Health Minister Tours KATH, Kumasi South Hospital to Tackle Maternal Deaths

Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Ayensu-Danquah, has visited the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Kumasi South Hospital at Asokwa as part of the Ministry of Health’s drive to strengthen maternal healthcare delivery and reduce preventable maternal deaths.

The visits on Wednesday marked the first day of her engagement in the Ashanti Region, focusing on high-burden referral facilities that provide critical maternal and newborn healthcare services.

At both hospitals, Hon. Ayensu-Danquah met with management and frontline health professionals to get first-hand information on the challenges affecting maternal healthcare delivery.

Discussions covered emergency obstetric care, referral systems, infrastructure, staffing levels and other factors influencing maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Health professionals at the facilities appealed to Government to expedite the completion of the Sewua and Afari Hospitals.

They noted that the two facilities would help decongest KATH and improve access to quality healthcare services across the region.

The Deputy Minister assured hospital authorities and health workers of Government’s commitment to addressing the challenges in maternal healthcare and improving the capacity of facilities to provide timely and quality care to mothers and newborns.

As part of the tour, Hon. Ayensu-Danquah visited the labour wards, outpatient departments and other key units of the two hospitals.

She also interacted with patients on the wards to hear directly about their experiences and the care they were receiving.

The engagements at KATH and Kumasi South Hospital ended the first day of the Deputy Minister’s visit to the Ashanti Region, providing key insights into the challenges and opportunities for improving maternal healthcare delivery in the region.
