2024 Elections: Being A Muslim Had Nothing To Do With My Loss- Bawumia

The 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has dispelled speculations that religious and tribal factors contributed to his loss in the Presidential polls.
Speaking with data from the December elections, he said the speculations were mere propaganda.
“When we finished the election, there were so many people who were giving different reasons for why we lost. So many different reasons but people were speaking without data and you can only speak falsefully.
“When you look at the reasons people were offering, one was that the Presidential candidate was Muslim. When I heard that I said this doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana that I know.”
Citing the Presidential and Parliamentary results of the NPP in the elections and other polls during the launch of his Thank You tour on April 23, the former veep said religion and tribe played no role in the defeat.
According to him, in most areas where the NPP Parliamentary candidates were Christians, he garnered more votes compared to theirs.
“I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis. When you look at the data, it’s very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP Presidential candidate performed better than the Christian Parliamentary candidates. So if they were voting according to religion, I wouldn’t be performing better than the Christian Parliamentary candidates.”
He expressed joy over the country’s disregard for religion and tribe in politics and urged the same to guard against it.
“Religion and tribe have not entered our political discourse. We should not therefore allow people to come in to play propaganda with religion and tribe. We are one nation. We will all go together for the good of this country.”
