We Aren’t Obligated to Provide Certified Voters Register Statistics- EC
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has neutralised perceptions suggesting that it is mandated to furnish political parties and independent candidates with the Statistics alongside the certified Voters Register.
It comes after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanded a breakdown of the register after receiving soft copies of the register.
“The Public should note that since 1992, the Electoral Commission has always provided ONLY the soft copies of the Certified Voters Register to the Political Parties without the breakdown of statistics requested by the NDC,” it said in a press statement issued on November 7.
It added that it is not obligated to provide any summary after the certified copy of the register.
“At the meeting, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) requested for the summary of the above Lists. Although the Commission is not required by law to provide statistics of the various lists to parties, in the spirit of responsiveness, it granted the request by the NDC.
“To enhance transparency and accountability, the EC took the time to generate the summaries requested on a Regional basis. Realizing that this would take time to generate, the parties requested the EC to send the breakdowns to them after waiting patiently.”
The Commission further assured that the Certified Voters Register is robust and credible.
“We urge the Public to support the Commission to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections in December 2024.”
