Unsupervised Use Of Aphrodisiacs Can Cause Total Closure To Vagina Opening— Gynaecologist

Dr. Alfred Adu-Boateng, an Obstetric Gynaecologist, has issued a strong warning against the arbitrary use of aphrodisiacs by women, as it can result in severe health consequences.

In a recent interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr. Adu-Boateng cautioned that such practices could lead to total closure of the vaginal opening, brain damage, and even fatal increases in heart rate.

The concern stems from the fact that certain aphrodisiacs, particularly the locally made ones, may contain undisclosed ingredients that can interact negatively with existing medications, putting women at risk.

Dr Adu-Boateng emphasized the real dangers associated with uninformed and unsupervised use of these products, particularly when women seek enhancements for low libido, vaginal laxity, or a lack of interest in sex.

The GNA spoke with some aphrodisiac dealers who revealed that an increasing number of women, both married and unmarried, have been patronizing their products, often on a regular basis. Some of the commonly sought after aphrodisiacs include ‘honey chocolate,’ ‘tea bag,’ ‘toffee,’ ‘chewing stick,’ and ‘gorontula.’

While some women attest to the positive effects of these products, claiming they have saved marriages and reignited sexual desire, Dr. Adu-Boateng stressed the importance of seeking medical advice before using any aphrodisiacs.

He urged women to consult with medical professionals to ensure their individual needs and medical considerations are taken into account.

Aphrodisiacs are substances believed to increase libido and address fertility issues or secondary sexual dysfunctions, such as erectile problems.

They are commonly derived from herbs, roots, and fruits like tiger nuts, coconuts, and ginger, and can be found in various forms, including herbal supplements, alcoholic beverages, toffees, sticks, creams, and gels.

Experts have cautioned that many aphrodisiacs lack scientific evidence to support their claimed effectiveness and safety.

Additionally, the purity and potency of these products often remain unverified, increasing the risk of adverse reactions and health complications.
