Mahama Confers with Council of State Over Petitions to Remove CJ

President John Dramani has begun consultations with the Council of State over three petitions seeking the removal of the country’s third female Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
A statement by the Minister of State for Government Communication on March 25, said the three have been forwarded to the Council for perusal and its advice.
This is in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
This is not the first attempt to remove the CJ who was sworn into office on June 12, 2023, by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo following the retirement of Justice Anin Yeboah, her predecessor.
The first was filed by lawyer and Professor of accounting, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, commonly known as Kweku Azar, citing allegations of misbehaviour and incompetence against the Chief Justice.
In a response on January 6, 2025, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the petition was frivolous, vexatious and unmeritorious.
“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in consultation with the Council of State, has concluded that the petition does not disclose a prima facie case warranting further action,” the statement issued right before he exited office said.
