I Cover My Rent With Rent Allowance- Ablakwa

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed his rented apartment at Airport Hills is covered with his portion of allowances allocated to Ghanaian lawmakers for house rent.

Aside from their base pay, he said Members of Parliament are entitled to allowances which include rent allowance.

This, he said, is used to cover his occupancy of the Airport Hills property he rents.

“In this discussion, what Hon Afenyo Markin has also failed to tell the Ghanaian people is that MPs receive rent allowance. We are entitled to the rental allowance. In the past, MPs were housed at Sakumono and then there was a decision that MPs should rather receive rent allowances so in addition to base pay, there is rent allowance and other allowances,” he said in an interview on TV3.

This was in reaction to allegations that he earns ¢15,000 as a legislator and yet rents an expensive apartment in the capital- an allegation he denied and challenged the Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin to prove.

“Let him prove when during the vetting I said I earn ¢15,000… At no point during my vetting did I say that I earned ¢15,000. We all know how much MPs earn. It is not ¢15,000.”
