Stop Abandoning Classrooms for Demonstration- GES to New Teachers

The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned teachers, particularly newly recruited staff, to desist from abandoning their respective tasks for demonstrations.

In a statement, it condemned the growing trend in which these teachers form unrecognised splinter groups to frequently besiege the Headquarters or engage the media regarding their concerns.

“These actions often occur during official school hours, with teachers leaving their duty posts without recourse to their Heads of School, District Directorates, or Regional Directorates.”

It noted that the Service operates through clearly defined administrative structures, with the teaching profession governed by a Code of Conduct expected to be upheld.

To address grievances, it directed teachers to first lodge such concerns with their Heads of School, and subsequently escalate them through the District and Regional Directorates, as appropriate.

“The National Office engages directly only with Regional Directorates and legally recognised teacher unions duly registered under the laws of Ghana.

The GES intends to subject any teacher who defies the laid down procedure to leave his/her duty post for the Headquarters or elsewhere during official school hours, or is captured on video or audio granting media interviews or participating in related activities during such hours, to the appropriate disciplinary procedures outlined in the Code.

“Management therefore, directs all Regional Directors to supervise District Directors and Heads of School to ensure strict compliance with this directive. District Directors and Heads of School must record any instance of teacher absenteeism and report it to Management.

“Any teacher recorded on video or audio engaging media houses or found at the Headquarters during official school hours will be held accountable, together with the School Head and the District Director responsible.”

Meanwhile, it said significant progress has been made in clearing inherited backlogs and streamlining processing systems, adding that any outstanding matters affecting individual staff must be addressed through the established administrative channels rather than through confrontational approaches directed at the Headquarters or the media.
