Sammy Gyamfi Alleges “They” Tried To Bribe Quayson To Pull Out Of By-election

The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has hailed the re-elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, for standing against all hurdles that were pulled before him ahead of the by-election.

According to the spokesperson of the opposition party, some people labelled as “they” attempted to bribe Quayson to back off from the by-election.

“Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us. They tried to bribe him to back off.”

He said when the attempt failed, the same people threatened him with jail.

“When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people.”

In his description of the yet-to-be-sworn legislator, he said “Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless. His personal conviction and determination to fight for justice against all odds, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, is the reason we are smiling today.”

Quayson contested the by-election after he was ousted from office through a supreme court ruling that rendered his election in 2020 null and void saying he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filed to be elected and subsequently got elected as an MP.

He was contested in the by-election by New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Charles Opoku and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu.

Certified results after the June 27 By-election showed the NPP polled 11,389 (42%); LPG – 85 (0.28%) and NDC – 17,205 (57.4%).

He is currently standing trial for perjury and forgery.
