Quayson Swearing In Scheduled For Tomorrow
The Member of Parliament-elect for the Assin North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, will be sworn into office on Tuesday, July 3, 2023.
It will be held at the Parliament House at 10 am.
Quayson contested the by-election after he was ousted from office through a supreme court ruling that rendered his election in 2020 null and void. It said he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filed to be elected and subsequently got elected as an MP.
He was contested in the by-election by New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Charles Opoku and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu.
Certified results after the June 27 By-election showed the NPP polled 11,389 (42%); LPG – 85 (0.28%) and NDC – 17,205 (57.4%).
Earlier today, the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, alleged some people attempted to bribe Quayson to back off from the by-election.
“Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us. They tried to bribe him to back off.”
He said when the attempt failed, the same people threatened him with jail.
“When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people.
Quayson is currently standing trial for perjury and forgery.
