Post-electoral Violence Tarnishing Ghana’s Image- PNP
The People’s National Party (PNP) has called attention to implication the post electoral violence will have on Ghana’s hard-earned image globally.
The political party is the recent body to condemn the acts that have led to the arrest of 110 people across the country.
In a statement issued on December 11, it noted that the incidence of violence was tarnishing Ghana’s reputation.
It has therefore called on the President-elect and state institutions to intervene to curtail the ongoing violence which is assumed to be perpetrated by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We call on President-elect John Dramani Mahama, as leader of the NDC, to demonstrate leadership by immediately calling his supporters to order. The President-elect must take responsibility and ensure that his party ceases these reckless actions, which are tarnishing Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.
“Furthermore, we urge the security forces to take swift action by arresting the perpetrators of these crimes. The law must be enforced to serve as a deterrent to those who seek to destabilise our nation through violence and intimidation.”
It also appealed to the international community, civil society organisations, academia, religious bodies, and the media to condemn the ongoing destruction of state properties, arson and looting.
“Silence in the face of such lawlessness is tantamount to complicity and sets a dangerous precedent for our nation. If these critical institutions fail to act, it will signal their acceptance of violence as a legitimate tool for political engagement—a norm that threatens the very fabric of our democracy.”
