Transport Minister: Kumasi International Airport Phase III Almost Complete
The Minister for Transport, Kwaku Asiamah, has said the last phase of the Kumasi International Airport is 89% complete.
The third phase involves the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, the construction of a new taxi link and two apron parking stands, an Air Traffic Control Building, and a Fire Station among others.
Giving an update on the project on Wednesday, March 29, Mr Asiamah said “on the Kumasi airport, we are upgrading it to international status and that is complete. A new passenger terminal and auxiliary facilities capable of handling about 1 million passengers annually have been completed. The phase 3 works which include aerobridges are about 89% complete.”
The third phase which costs £58,900,000 began in 2019 and was scheduled to be completed together with the second phase in 2022.
The first phase of the project began in 2013 in which phase defective runways were reconstructed with airfield lights and aeronautical ground lights installed for night operations at the airport.
It was commissioned in December 2014.
The second phase started in 2016 during which a new two-storey ultra-modern terminal to handle one million passengers per annum, two boarding bridges, a road network, a perimeter fence, a substation and a parking lot among others were constructed.
The building also included spaces like VVIP and VIP lounges, restaurants, commercial areas, three boarding gates, a central screening system for passengers, an IATA standard baggage handling system, and also offices for the airline companies.
