Onua TV/ FM Given 7 Days To retract, Apologise To Bantama MP

Lawyers for Francis Asenso Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency have issued a seven-day ultimatum to Accra-based Onua Tv and FM to apologise and retract a “false statement” they’ve been making against their client.

The legal team of the legislator have threatened to file a defamation suit against the media stations if they fail to retract and apologise for the publication.

This comes after the media stations reportedly alleged that Asenso Boakye interfered and hindered the transfer of Mr Adubufuor, a Customs Officer stationed at the Tema Port after a Disciplinary Committee had made that recommendation.

This, it reported, happened in 2018 when the lawmaker was the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President.

The lawyers for Asenso Boakye note that the media stations continue to peddle the “falsehood” despite their clients’ clarification in a press statement.

“Our clients find your persistent conduct…to be in bad faith and intended to defame him”, the lawyers said.

It added, “In the circumstance, we have our client’s instruction to demand, and we hereby demand a retraction and an unqualified apology to our client, for peddling the aforementioned blatant and malicious falsehood about him, within seven days of receipt of this notice, through the same media you published the said falsehood”.

In a statement on August 29, 2022, Asenso Boakye recounted that he received a call from some of his constituents who informed him about the transfer of Mr Adubufuor.

He noted that the constituents felt the transfer “unfairly targeted the dutiful performance of his function as customs officer”.
The lawmaker, therefore “called the then Customs Boss to ascertain the veracity of the claim. He (the Customs Boss) denied any such transfer was being considered. I conveyed this feedback to the elders and took no further interest in the matter.

“At no time in the course of my conversation with the Customs Boss or Captain Smart was I made aware of any disciplinary committee recommendation to transfer Mr Adubofuor as was stated by Captain Smart on his TV programme. “
