Minority: We Don’t Support Asiedu Nketia

The Minority in Parliament has disclaimed the assertion that it supports the candidature of Johnson Asiedu Nketia as the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a press statement, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu “categorically denied” the allegation and urged the public to disregard the statement.

“The attention of the leadership of the NDC Caucus in Parliament has been drawn to the statement made by Hon Ahmed Ibrahim, MP for Banda and Deputy Chief Whip at the launch of the election campaign of Hon Johnson Asiedu Nketia on Tuesday, 25th October 2022, to the effect that the NDC Caucus in Parliament was supporting the candidature of the Hon Asiedu Nketia for the position of the party”, a part of the statement from the Caucus said.

According to the Caucus, it hasn’t met on the matter, nor has it taken such a decision.

It noted that it hasn’t met on any other candidate of the party and furthered that no position has been taken on any of the candidates vying for the various positions of the party.

According to the statement, Ahmed Banda has apologised to the Caucus for the false statement he made.

It further advised the members of the caucus to refrain from making such statements.

The current General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has decided not to vie for that position after holding onto it for seventeen years.

He is now eyeing the National Chairmanship position.

On Tuesday, he launched his election campaign at the Karma Conference Centre in Accra.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Chief Whip of the NDC caucus in Parliament said the caucus was in favour of Asiedu Nketia over the incumbent Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

“We give you our unflinching support,” he said, and added “We are not just supporting you (Asiedu Nketia).. we will do the work with you (Asiedu Nketia).”

The NDC will hold its national congress on December 17 to elect national executives.
